Comedy: John Mulaney (Kid Gorgeous & Comeback kid)
Comedy Special
John Mulaney
A handsome American stand-up comedian, actor, writer, and producer. He has hosted SNL (Saturday Night Live) several times. What makes him unique is his style of talking. John is a voice artist, however, he does his stand-ups in a monotone voice. He says the most hilarious things with a very straight face. The sudden ups and downs in his voice aren't predictable. He makes up the silliest verses and the funniest monologues. He beats Seth Meyers. Honestly, he is a broadway show all by himself. The majority of times you will have no idea what he is about to say and when things are predictable, his tone comes as a surprise. Andrew Glouberman in the Netflix series Big mouth is voiced by John Mulaney.
A 2018 Primetime Emmy Award winner for outstanding writing for a variety special. This is the name of the award that Kid Gorgeous won. It is that long. When John did this show, he was 35 years old. Hence, he shared his struggle of being in this weird age. It is the age before old age, i.e., the gross age. The problems faced by John at this gross age is very relatable to me as a 19-year-old. Therefore, I am led to believe that I am in my mid-life crisis. You would expect John to share solutions for these problems but no. You are wrong. The problem is recognized and it shall continue to exist because there exists no solution. John goes on to share his school life, college life yadi yadi yada... A comic is usually funny when it is relatable and I wasn't let down. He brought out ironies like how you are supposed to prove to a robot that you are not a robot etc. His political take on Trump was the best I have seen and trust me when I say I have seen a lot. A must watch!
Rating: 5/5
The Comeback Kid is a 2015 sassy stand-up special featuring a younger John Mulaney. John Mulaney has a sharp wit with quite an attitude. The special features his mom, his childhood, and his meeting with Bill Clinton. Of course, it features his wife and dad too. According to my judgment, this is an observational reaction special. John observes something and he has an opinion about it. You can never predict the crazy reaction of his sly observation. The analogies are on point rib-tickling. He has you hooked from beginning to end. Lastly, John Mulaney is an American. His childhood movies did not consist of Sri Krishna, Shahrukh Khan, or My Friend Ganesha. Though, I am curious about what he would have to say about them. He talks about movies and TV shows that are relatable to his childhood. Hence, there were many references that were beyond my scope of understanding. However, his tone and expressions didn't let a foreigner get unhooked. Therefore, I conclude it was a good special.
The fact that you have a mid-life crisis at the age of 19 is beyond me but great review!
